This week, you may have seen a story about three hikers falling over Vernal Falls at Yosemite. While it has been some time, I do remember the area being heavily barricaded and ample park service signs posted about saftey. Apparently, people in this group thought it would be a good idea to climb over the barricades into the Merced River...stupidity at its best. Don't let this story deter you from visiting the mist trail. We loved this trail and then continued on to see Nevada Falls and returned via the John Muir trail...a terrific hike.
I do feel for the onlookers (as it is a busy hike to the Vernal Falls overlook...it thins out when you continue on to Nevada). Can you imagine having a nice vacation and have to witness the chaos? On our second day hike (Yosemite Falls), on the way down, a rescue was just starting for a rock-climber. We didn't actual ever see the problem/accident...but we did see many of the rescue crew climbing up the trail with some heafty equipment.
Play smart in the wilderness!

wow, love the waterfall!
Great photos. Thanks for the information.
Must have been a great hike.
So sad for the hikers. Any tragedy is sad though it perhaps was preventable.
Great photos as always of wonderful places to hike. Stunning scenery.
Really beautiful!
Lovely waterfall shots, and like the rainbow caught in the spray too:)
Such a lovely place, nonetheless it won't spell safe for all...sad for the hikers...
We enjoy hiking to waterfalls, but I have seen people do stupid and foolish things around them. We haven't been to Yosemite yet, but I'm hoping we can make it.
Thanks for visiting my site.
Nice shots. Haven't been to Yosemite in a very long time. The crowds are a bit much. But I miss it!
Beautiful photos, it's sad to think about what happened there. We have similar incidents in my town every year, whether it's a tourist climbing in Garden of the Gods, or somebody climbing over the railings at Helen Hunt Falls, or somebody leaving a steep mountain trail. As you said, be smart - this isn't Disneyland where everything is controlled.
We have lots of hiking accidents here too - mostly stupidity! Thanks for stopping by!
Terrific photos!
